Best Figma Translation Plugin for Design Teams
Figma has no native translation, so the options are a TMS connector, an agency round-trip, or translating inside the file. What each actually costs a team.

Quick answer — Figma has no built-in translation, so teams either export to a TMS, send frames to an agency, or translate inside the file. Translating in place keeps the frames, components and auto-layout intact — which is where the round-trip routes lose their time.
Vitra.ai Universe translates in place, then checks what it changed.
What the options actually are
Figma ships no native translation, so every team lands on one of four routes. Lokalise, Crowdin, Phrase and Smartling all offer Figma plugins or connectors, and they are genuinely good at the string half of the problem.
| Route | What happens | Where it hurts |
|---|---|---|
| Send files to an agency | Export, email, wait, reimport, relayout | Days per round, and every change starts a new one |
| Connector to a TMS | Strings leave, come back as strings | Layout is still your problem |
| Machine translation by hand | Copy out, paste back, per string | Fine for ten strings, hopeless at a thousand |
| Translate in place | Words change inside the file | Needs the checks to run in place too |
The distinction that matters is not which vendor. It is whether the words leave the file.
Why the round trip costs more than it looks
Strings go out. Somebody translates them. They come back, and now German runs thirty percent longer than the English the frame was designed around.
So a designer reopens every frame, fixes overflow, re-runs auto-layout, and discovers that three components inherited a change made while the strings were away. Then a copy edit lands and the whole loop restarts.
That back-and-forth is the actual cost, and it is invisible on an invoice because it lands on the design team rather than the vendor.
Translating inside the file
Image translation works on the layer, so text frames, components, variants and auto-layout survive because nothing was ever exported. Expansion reflows where the layout already knows how to reflow. Coverage matters here too. A plugin that offers a dozen languages decides your market list for you, which is a strange thing to let a plugin do.
The checks are the difference
Three checks run on the output rather than on a promise. A proofreading agent reads it as a language and a subject-matter expert, a back-translation agent re-translates and compares so meaning drift is caught mechanically, and a region-aware rule pass returns approved, review or blocked with the findings behind it. That is quality control, and it is the part the export-and-email route never had.
Findings route to a person where they should. Collaborative proofreading means an in-market reviewer comments on the actual frame rather than on row 412 of a spreadsheet, and the correction writes back to translation memory — so the same term is already right in the next file, and in the app and the website that share that memory.
That last part is what a per-tool plugin structurally cannot do.
FAQ
Does Figma have built-in translation? No. Figma ships no native translation, so teams use a plugin, a TMS connector such as Lokalise, Crowdin, Phrase or Smartling, or send exported frames to an agency and reimport the results.
What breaks when translated text comes back into Figma? Layout. German commonly runs about thirty percent longer than English, so frames overflow, auto-layout has to be re-run, and components changed while the strings were out no longer match.
Can a Figma design be translated without exporting anything? Yes. Translating on the text layer inside the file leaves frames, components, variants and auto-layout intact, because nothing is ever exported and reimported.
How is translation quality checked inside a design tool? By running the checks on the output: a proofreading pass, a back-translation comparison to catch meaning drift, and a region-aware rule check returning approved, review or blocked with the findings.
