> **Quick answer —** Photoshop has no native translation, so the common routes are retyping by hand or sending the PSD out and getting a rebuilt file back. Translating on the text layer keeps layer order, smart objects and effects intact.[Vitra.ai Universe](https://www.vitra.ai/integration/adobe-photoshop) translates in place, then checks what it changed.

## The PSD problem

A layered file is a set of decisions — layer order, masks, smart objects, layer effects, blending. Text is one layer among them, and it is positioned relative to everything else.

Adobe ships no translation feature, so the words come out and go back in by hand, or the file goes to someone who rebuilds it.

Route

What happens

Where it hurts

Send files to an agency

Export, email, wait, reimport, relayout

Days per round, and every change starts a new one

Connector to a TMS

Strings leave, come back as strings

Layout is still your problem

Machine translation by hand

Copy out, paste back, per string

Fine for ten strings, hopeless at a thousand

Translate in place

Words change inside the file

Needs the checks to run in place too

## Retyping is where the file degrades

Someone opens the PSD, selects the text layer, pastes the German, and the line now runs past the artwork it was set against. They shrink the point size. Then the next language needs a different size, and after six markets the range has six typographic treatments and no one can say which is correct. Effects applied to the original layer sometimes survive the edit and sometimes do not.

None of this is difficult work. It is just work that repeats per language and per file, and it is done by the most expensive person in the chain.

## Translating on the layer

[Image translation](https://www.vitra.ai/features/image-translation) replaces the text inside the layer, so layer order, smart objects, masks and effects are untouched — because the file is never rebuilt.

Type is re-set rather than retyped, which is what lets thirty markets be a batch instead of thirty afternoons.

## What runs after the words change

Three checks run on the output rather than on a promise. A proofreading agent reads it as a language and a subject-matter expert, a [back-translation](https://www.vitra.ai/general/back-translation) agent re-translates and compares so meaning drift is caught mechanically, and a region-aware rule pass returns approved, review or blocked with the findings behind it. That is [quality control](https://www.vitra.ai/features/quality-control), and it is the part the export-and-email route never had.

A flagged image can be regenerated into a version appropriate for that region straight from the verdict, rather than rejoining a design queue.

Reviewers comment on the rendered artwork instead of a string export, and their corrections write back to [translation memory](https://www.vitra.ai/features/translation-memory), so the product name approved here is already correct in the [InDesign brochure](https://www.vitra.ai/general/translate-indesign-files) and the dubbed video that share it.

## FAQ

**Does Photoshop have a translation feature?** No. Adobe ships no translation in Photoshop, so text is normally retyped by hand into each language or the file is sent out and returned as a rebuilt version.

**What gets lost when a PSD is rebuilt for another language?** Layer effects, smart object links and consistent type treatment. Manual resizing to make longer text fit leaves each market with a different point size and no record of which is correct.

**Can Photoshop text be translated without retyping it?** Yes. Translating on the text layer replaces the words inside the existing layer, so layer order, masks, smart objects and effects survive because the file is never rebuilt.

**What should be checked after translating artwork?** Meaning drift through back-translation, language and domain correctness through a proofreading pass, and regional appropriateness of both the text and the imagery it sits on.
