## Vector files punish the round trip harder

An .ai file is paths, and type in it is usually doing layout work — set on a path, fitted to a shape, aligned to artwork that was drawn around it.

Send it out and one of two things comes back. Either the type was outlined, in which case it is no longer text and the next change means redrawing it, or it was retyped and the fitting is gone.

## The outlining trap

Outlining is the standard defence against a font the other end does not have, and it is the thing that makes a file unusable for the language after next.

Once type is outlined, the words are shapes. There is no text to translate, no [memory](https://www.vitra.ai/features/translation-memory) match to apply, and no way to fix a typo without a designer redrawing letters.

Files that have been through two agencies and back are frequently in exactly this state, which is why the third language costs more than the first two together.
