> **Quick answer —** A product detail page needs six image slots: hero on white, scale reference, detail macro, in-use context, a spec or size graphic, and packaging. Only the hero and the macro need original capture — the rest can be built from that capture.[Vitra.ai Universe](https://www.vitra.ai/platform) generates, adapts and translates the whole set.

## Six slots, not a gallery

Most PDP galleries are a pile of whatever the shoot produced. The listings that convert treat the gallery as fixed slots, each answering a question the shopper has in order.

Slot

The question it answers

Hero on white

Is this the thing I searched for?

Scale reference

How big is it really?

Detail macro

What is it made of?

In-use context

Where does this go in my life?

Spec or size graphic

Will it fit me or my space?

Packaging

What turns up in the box?

Miss the scale shot and you get the size question in reviews. Miss packaging and you get "is this the full set?" in pre-purchase chat.

## Two need a camera, four do not

Hero and macro carry information nothing else can supply, so they come from capture. The other four are constructions.

Scale references are composites — the product against a recognisable object, or in a room at true proportion. In-use context is the hero placed in a generated environment. The spec graphic is typography over a plain field. And the packaging shot is usually the box photographed once, then reused for every variant inside it. That is four slots produced from assets you already own, which is why the gallery is a much cheaper thing to complete than a shoot list suggests.

## The graphic slot is the one that gets skipped

It is also the one that reduces returns most, because it is the only slot that carries numbers.

A size graphic is text over an image, which means it is a translation problem the moment you sell in a second market.

Building it as a layered asset rather than a flat export is what lets [image translation](https://www.vitra.ai/features/image-translation) re-render it in the next language instead of a designer rebuilding it.

Centimetres and inches both belong on it. So does the measurement method, because "chest 42in" measured flat and measured around are different garments to a shopper with a tape.

## Building the set once

The efficient order is capture hero and macro, then generate the rest against your brand kit with [image creation](https://www.vitra.ai/features/image-creation), then let [image personalization](https://www.vitra.ai/features/image-personalization) throw the per-channel crops.

Store the layered versions, not just the flat PNGs. An [asset manager](https://www.vitra.ai/features/asset-manager) that keeps the source means next season's colourway is an edit rather than a rebuild, and it keeps the six slots consistent across a [catalogue](https://www.vitra.ai/solutions/e-commerce-localization) where six different people are loading listings. The gallery has a moving counterpart too. [PDP video](https://www.vitra.ai/e-commerce/pdp-video-generation) is built from the same stills and the copy already on the page.

## FAQ

**How many images should a product detail page have?** Six covers the questions shoppers ask in sequence: hero on white, scale, detail macro, in-use, a spec or size graphic, and packaging. More images help only if they answer a new question rather than repeating an angle.

**Which PDP images actually need a photographer?** The hero and the detail macro. Both carry material information that cannot be inferred. Scale references, lifestyle context, spec graphics and packaging shots are constructions built from assets you already hold.

**Why does the size graphic matter more than the extra angle?** Because it is the only slot carrying numbers, and wrong or missing measurements are a leading cause of apparel returns. It also needs both metric and imperial, plus how the measurement was taken.

**What should be stored after a PDP shoot?** The layered sources, not only the flattened exports. A colourway or a new market becomes an edit to an existing file instead of a rebuild, and the gallery stays consistent when several people load listings.
