> **Quick answer —** Subtitles matter because most social and in-app video plays muted, and because accessibility rules treat captions as a requirement rather than a nicety. Use a sidecar caption file rather than burning text into the frame.[Vitra.ai Universe](https://www.vitra.ai/platform) generates subtitles and dubbed audio from the same source.

## Muted is the default, not the exception

Video in a social feed autoplays without sound. So does most in-app video, and anything playing on a branch screen with the volume down. A bank explainer that only works with audio is a bank explainer most people scroll past.

Captions are what make the first three seconds legible.

## Burned in versus sidecar

Burning captions into the frame is easy and it costs you three things.

Burned into the frame

Sidecar caption file

Not machine readable, so invisible to search

Indexable transcript

A text fix means re-rendering the video

Text fix is a file edit

One language per rendered file

Several tracks, one video

Cannot be resized by the viewer

Respects accessibility settings

That last row is the compliance one. Accessibility guidance generally expects captions the user can control, and a picture of text controls nothing.

## Accuracy matters more here than in most industries

An auto-generated caption that turns "no fee" into "no free" is a small error in most contexts. On a bank's product video it's a claim, and it sits on screen in writing. Financial vocabulary is exactly where generic speech recognition degrades: product names, regulator acronyms, currency figures. A [glossary pass](https://www.vitra.ai/features/quality-control) fixes most of it, and generating [subtitles](https://www.vitra.ai/tools/subtitle-translation) from the same source as the [dubbed audio](https://www.vitra.ai/features/video-dubbing) stops the two saying different things when the script changes.

## The reach argument nobody makes

A caption file is a transcript. It's text on the page, in the language of the market, describing your product — which is the only part of a video a search engine can read.

## Where to start

Add sidecar captions to the videos already embedded on product pages. If those videos are still English-only, [dubbing](https://www.vitra.ai/banking/bank-video-dubbing) is the next step. No new production, and it's the cheapest indexable content a bank has sitting unused.

## FAQ

**Why do bank videos need subtitles?** Because most viewing is muted. Social feeds, in-app video and branch screens default to no sound, so a video that only works with audio loses the first three seconds where attention is decided.

**Should captions be burned into the video or a separate file?** A separate sidecar file. Burned-in text is invisible to search, needs a re-render to correct, holds one language per file, and cannot be resized by a viewer who needs it larger.

**Why are captions riskier for banks than other industries?** Because an error becomes a written claim. Speech recognition degrades on product names, regulator acronyms and currency figures, so no fee turning into no free is a compliance problem rather than a typo.

**Do subtitles help a bank's search visibility?** Yes. A caption file is a transcript, which is text in the market's language describing the product and the only part of a video a search engine can actually read.
